In room-scale VR users can walk around, but limited space is a problem. Mobile VR users with only three degrees of freedom have to rely on head movement or controllers. Teleportation is a fun way to get around the limitations of VR. Although not truly natural, users are accustomed to the concept of teleportation from sci-fi and fantasy, and it is not hard to implement. The Unity project for this tutorial is available for download here. To save space, Oculus Utilities and VR Sample Scenes are not included, but the source files that were modified are included in the top level of the project.

These files are OVRPlugin. Don't miss out! To get started, create a new Unity project, Teleporter. If you are prompted to update the package, follow the prompts to install the update and restart Unity.

A folder named Oculus will be created in your project. You can find a fixed copy of OVRPlugin. This package includes a number of sample scenes as well as prefabs and scripts that we will customize to add a laser pointer and reticle. If you are using the Gear VR, you will need to activate Developer Mode on your phone to test your app.

You will also need to activate Developer Mode if you are using an Oculus Go. First, remove the Main Camera object that was created by default. We will be using a custom camera.

Remove the original CenterEyeAnchor. If both hands are set correctly, the controller will automatically be displayed for the correct hand when you run the scene. Next, add a laser beam that extends from the controller. If you want a different colored laser, you can easily create a different colored material and use it in the Line Renderer. November in Unity Development. Is there a simple way to allow the laser pointer beam to 'collide' with the canvas to display a dot or ring moving along the canvas panel surface, instead of just travelling through the canvas?

I know I can adjust the length of the laser beam but I have UI panels at different depths so need the laser beam to display a dot at different depths per each canvas.

Best Answer. March Accepted Answer. It updates the endpoint every frame so that the laser doesn't go through the canvas. Not saying you need to use the sample, but that the code itself to do that update is only a few lines.

February I have the exact same question. I got to where i have a laserpointer coming from the controller with a OVRPhysicsRaycaster and it can trigger Events, but I too am trying to make the laser "end" at the point where it collides with another collider. No luck yet after a full day on it. Still no luck on my end.

I've just reduced the length of the laser pointer easily done via the inspector with this prefab. But yeah, I would really appreciate an official solution instead of combining multiple plugins. For a canvas, there should be a radio toggle on the right side called "raycast target," make sure that is on enabled. That didn't always work for me, so as a last option not ideal you can add a box-collider to the canvas for it to interact with.

I was reading about this the other day. Oculus has an interesting idea That sounds like a great idea actually. Do you know of any resources to raycast the hit position on canvas using OVRRaycaster ray from the controller rather than standard unity raycast tutorials?

This is what I used. They provided some good examples of how to use the laser pointer for different things. You may need to make a new line renderer that to use in place of the one provided if you want to do the "short version" of the laser.

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset. It's basically a screen strapped to your face with correction optics and head tracker built in, to make you feel like you actually are inside a different world instead of just looking at a monitor. I have a developer kit and I must say, the effect is truly astonishing.

I definitely believe this is the future of 3D applications such as gaming or simulations. Currently only the developer kit is for sale. The final version is supposed to come out sometimeand will feature a MUCH better display, positional tracking as well as rotational, and much more.
